The transition from chokutō to tachi marks the birth of the Nihontō as a distinct type.Considered the golden age of Japanese sword making. The Five Traditions (Gokaden) flourished. Blades became grander, with wider bodies, larger kissaki (ō-kissaki), and magnificent hamon. Famous smiths like Masamune worked in this period.
ArmorThe ō-yoroi (great armor) was developed for mounted archery warfare. This boxy, heavy armor with large sode (shoulder guards) became the iconic armor of the classical samurai.Armor became more robust to meet the demands of the Mongol invasions.
