About This Armor Type

The haramaki (腹巻, "belly wrap") appeared in the Kamakura period and came into wide use through the Muromachi and Sengoku eras. Opening at the back — closed by a separate plate, the seita-ita — it wrapped the torso in laced kozane and served mounted and dismounted combat alike. Lighter than the ō-yoroi and easier to don than the dō-maru, it was favored by Sengoku-period samurai who prized speed and flexibility.
