About This Armor Type

The ō-yoroi (大鎧, "great armor") is the classic armor of the Heian and Kamakura periods, worn by the mounted archers of the upper warrior class. Its box-like dō closes on the right side and is built of lacquered kozane (scales) laced in silk, with the deep sendan-no-ita and kyubi-no-ita protecting the chest. The large, six-panel sode functioned almost as shields for a mounted fighter, and the shikoro of the kabuto flared wide to guard the neck and shoulders. Heavy by later standards, the ō-yoroi embodied the status and mounted warfare of its age.
