About This Armor Type

The nanban-dō (南蛮胴, "southern barbarian cuirass") adapts the European-style plate cuirass introduced to Japan through Nanban trade in the late sixteenth century. Its solid, often bullet-tested one- or two-piece iron breastplate was lighter and far more shot-resistant than laced kozane construction, and was typically mounted with Japanese sode, kote, kusazuri, and a kabuto. It represents the technical and cultural exchange at the close of the Sengoku period.

Where information cannot be established from the available photographs or sources, this record states "Unknown" or "Not specified by the manufacturer" rather than inferring detail. Historical attribution is not automatically equated with vendor marketing claims.
